We all Should Teach our Children to use VirusTotal.

Have you or your child ever wanted to add a cool game mod but worried about downloading a virus? When my daughter started playing Minecraft, she wanted to add mods to make the game more fun. Mods can change how the game looks, add new features, or make it run better. Some mods are official and come from Minecraft, but others are made by different players or companies.

I noticed that a lot of the unofficial mods we found were dangerous. Some had malicious software called "information stealers." These programs try to take important things like usernames, passwords, credit card information, and even cryptocurrency. Hackers can sell or give away this stolen data on the internet.

To stay safe, I had my daughter use a tool called VirusTotal before installing any mods. VirusTotal lets you upload files to its website, where many antivirus programs check to see if the files are safe. Sometimes, files that got past our browser’s security or our computer's antivirus were caught by VirusTotal.

Many people who work in computer security, like me, use VirusTotal for research and threat intelligence. But everyone should use it to protect their computer and personal information. VirusTotal is easy to use. There are only three steps to check a file:
  1. Go to www.virustotal.com.

  1. Upload the file you want to check.

  1. Review the results to see if the file is safe.

VirusTotal isn't just for game mods. It can be used to check all types of files and links. It’s so simple that anyone—from your kids to your grandparents—can use it. You don't even need an account to access its basic features.

Using VirusTotal saved my daughter from a lot of trouble. Without it, her debit card number, gaming accounts, or other personal info could have been stolen. That's scary, right? We also saved time by avoiding the headaches of fixing her accounts and restoring her computer. It only takes a few minutes to upload and review a file before you install it.
